Smokin Aces

I saw Smokin Aces the night it came out. I was very excited about the film when I saw its trailer months ago. What is not to love? It’s action, about the mob, hitmen/women! To add flame to the fire, they got crazy wackos running around with black rubber armor, Alicia Keys in HOT fishnets with bad ass intentions to KILL! Gaaa.

BIG-However; I left the theater feeling very disgusted and came very close to walking out before the film was over.

It is not that Smokin Aces is a bad film. It is pretty good; the film delivers. BUT it is when it is compared to the work of the creater of this artistic/action genre, that it fails – miserably! We have all seen the artistic cinematic qualities/creativity that makes Smokin Aces “cool” before in: Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Kill Bill AND I will ARGUE Sin City. FOR GOSH SAKES. And then I realized that I was watching sychronized, plug-in the formula-to-make-a-creative-intelligent-action-film. Oh, dear God. I was heartbroken, when I made the realization. And this came after watching the originators’ GRIND HOUSE trailer before Smokin Aces screened and it obviously robbed me of all enjoyment from the film. HOW CAN ANYTHING COMPETE with Tarantino teamed with Rodriguez?!!!!!

The name itself (Grind House) has a place in film history. The films: Planet Terror and Death Proof are bringing back the 35 mm stream roll quality and even the whole theater going experience from the time period of the 60’s/70’s. It is pure film in the raw. And that is what I like about it! It is original because we are going back to the form/aesthetic/sound of film. And then on top of that they are HORROR films! YES!!!!

And that is it. Maybe I could have enjoyed myself, if I didn’t get remided that I already saw the creativity from Smokin Aces before from OTHER BETTER FILMMAKERS. None the less. I still liked the acting abilities of Alicia Keys and Common. But the lame sad/thriller music at the end when Ryan Reynolds makes his predictable-detrimental decision has got to go!

Should I boycott all theater exhibited films till April? Maybe…….
