So, how do you know where North is? - without using a compass
(Northern Hemisphere)
At night, provided you can see the stars, you should be able to locate the constellation Ursa Major ( “Great Bear” / “Big Dipper” / “Plough” ) which is visible all year round.
The two stars at the end of the “bowl” point to the bright star “Polaris Borealis” (the North Star) - that’s where North is.
.
In the daytime though, use your wristwatch! ( provided its set to local time! )
Take the watch off, and lay it flat.
Point the hour hand at the sun, and find the position exactly halfway between the hour hand and the 12.
This gives due South, and you should be able to extent the line back, through the centre of the watch to point to North.
.
(Southern Hemisphere)
Night: - find the Southern celestial pole star ”Sigma Octantis” by using the constellation “Crux” (Southern Cross) - Sigma Octantis lies about 4.5 times the length of the cross below the cross (if viewed as a “Christian cross” )
.
Day: As above, but point 12 at the sun, and bisect the angle between the 12 and the hour hand. - This gives North
.
Got a digital watch?
Then draw an analogue watch, and follow the above!!Â

 I hit the big 3-0……
Had a nice “quiet” meal at another local pub - the Black Cock Inn
Surprised, but very happy to see so many friends (and presents!)
Oh, and the cake!!! (yes, there are 30 candles!!)

New year 2007

Spent in the local pub - well, the Discovery Inn.
Had a little too much of the” party spirit”!!!
Don’t remember much of New Year’s day - though I’m told that I was force-fed Alka-Seltza and Lucozade…..

Well, first there was Christmas….
Bought a tree, decorated it….. mulled the wine and got merry!!
Actually, Rachel mulled the wine - i just transported the tree and carried it into the flat……
Kinda helped decorate it too……
.
You know the mulled wine is strong when you fall off the foot stool after just a few sips….. (not mentioning any names, but it wasn’t me!)

Lacy things, the wife is missin’
Didn’t ask, for her permission,
I’m wearing her clothes,
Her silk panyhose,
Walkin’ ’round in women’s underwear.
.
In the store, there’s a teddy
Little straps, like spaghetti,
It holds me so tight,
Like handcuffs at night,
Walkin’ ’round in women’s underwear.
.
In the office there’s a guy named Melvin
He pretends that I am Murphy Brown
He’ll say “Are you Ready?” I’ll say “Whoa, Man!”
“Let’s wait ’til our wives are out of town!”
.
Later on, if ya wanna,
We can dress, like Madonna,
Put on some eyeshade,
And join the parade,
Walkin’ ’round in women’s underwear!
.
Lacy Things…… Missin’
Didn’t ask….. permission,
Wearing her clothes,
her silk pantyhose,
Walkin round in Women’s underwear
Walkin ’round in women’s underwear,
Walkin ’round in womens underwear!

15th December, I go to Olympia with Rachel and her parents….
wow!

There was lots to see, and not just in the areana…. with food stalls and shops galore!
The miniture dog trials were fun to watch - terriers and toy poodles belting through the obstical course with little instruction from their owners!!
The Met. police display was good - removing stirrups and saddles whilst jumping small fences….
Then there was the puissonce (spl)….. this wall is 7′4″ (Seven Foot Four Inches people!!)

The following day was spend a little more relaxed…..
To the Science museum (computer/video game history) and Natural History Museum…. complete with an ice rink outside!

My car got vandalised the other week…..
Smashed the drivers window, and had a rummage through the glove box….. but didn’t take anything.
Claimed the damage from my insurance company ( i get to pay the “excess” ) - so autoglass were called to repair the damage….

Upon arrival ( had to take the day off work to wait form them - wasn’t going to leave my car “unattended” with the window out! ), the technician told me that he didn’t have the glass for the door, and so he proceeded to mark up a sheet of perspex……
After removing the remaining glass from the door with a metal hook, and sucessfully marking the outline of the “hole”, he cut out the perspex with a knife…. scoring the line, and bending and breaking the perspex…
This would have been good, in principal, had it not been that the second bend did not cause the perspex to break along the intended scored line…. but rather….. in half.
Expecting the technician to start again with a new sheet of perspex, he continued to install the broken sheet into the door…. Putting my fears at rest by reassuring me that the fitting would be waterproof, as he had waterproof tape. This tape turned out to be electrcians insulation tape.

Not happy with this, and realising that the door wont lock at the broken glass had jammed the mechanism, i took it to the autoglass centre…..
I was politely informed that the dont have “clear” glass for the drivers side of my car, only for the passengers side…. but i could have either blue, or green glass…. or wait for clear glass to be send (by special order) form the manufacturer, and have a new sheet of perspex installed in the mean time.
I opted for the new perspex and the wait.
Fair enough, and due credit to Autoglass - they patched up my car and sent me on my way….
A few days later i chased up the order, ( the tape was peeling, and the whistling was getting annoying ) and was pleased to find out that they had received the glass for my car - i duly took my car to them ( they didn’t have any mobile units available! ) and they fitted the glass.
Job done!
